Bryn Loosley misspent much of his youth as frontman for raucous roots rockers Buffalo Creek, playing dives all over Northern California, singing songs about girls and booze, and selling their three albums out of his sweet brown van. But after seven years, Bryn left town. He sold the van. He moved to Portland, Oregon, and later to Santa Cruz, California, to write and perform on his own, and with his band, the Back Pages. He teaches middle school. He writes and performs catchy, poppy, Americana songs about the presidents, and the months of the year, and sometimes still about girls. In 2011, Bryn won a Gail Rich Award, given to artists who inspire the diverse and culturally-rich community of Santa Cruz. The award is cool, but sometimes, he misses the van.

AUGUST - "Summer Job"

We're knee deep into recording the "Blood Year" songs presented here. Here's an early version of the recording of the song for August, called "Summer Job.

July - "Summertime Girl"

This lighthearted, funky little song could have easily served for any month of the summer, but it feels like July to me. August carries the weight of anticipation of the end of summer, and June is about change. July is a frivolous month. To me, July is barefoot, it's BBQs, fireworks, swimming in the river, and cans of beer from a cooler. July is perfect.

Gail Rich Award Video

Though it was some time ago now, receiving a Gail Rich Award was an experience that continues to pay dividends for me. It has led to some wonderful opportunities, and I remain deeply thankful to Wallace Baine, The Sentinel, and The Cultural Council of Santa Cruz for selecting me from so many incredible Santa Cruz artists. Above it the video of my portion of the awards ceremony. The complete ceremony, featuring the other five 2011 recipients, is also available on YouTube.

GAIL RICH AWARD

I am greatly honored to have been chosen as a recipient of a Gail Rich Award for 2011. The awards are presented by the Santa Cruz Cultural Council to six recipients in order to "recognize select individuals who inspire our diverse and culturally-rich community." The awards are presented in a ceremony at the Rio Theater. This year's event is scheduled for January 26, 2010 at 7:30 pm.

Given the distinguished accomplishments of folks from Santa Cruz who have received this award in the past, I feel I have a lot to live up to. My thanks go out to the Cultural Council and the Santa Cruz Sentinel for the encouragement this award provides. I hope to live up to it.
